Oregon Health & Science University
School of Nursing

The Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program offered by Oregon Health & Science University’s School of Nursing is designed for both current and future Nurse Practitioners. It offers two pathways by which to obtain a DNP degree, the highest degree in advanced nursing practice: a post Bachelor’s pathway and a post Master’s pathway.

The post Bachelor’s DNP pathway prepares nurses to become Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) in four specialization areas:

  • Adult Health Illness Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Nurse Midwifery
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Courses for these specialty areas are offered on the Portland campus.

The post Master’s DNP pathway was designed for Master’s prepared APRNs. The program is offered in a blended format to accommodate working nurses. Courses are taught online, but nurses must attend 2-4 day intensive sessions each term on the Portland campus.

University of Portland
School of Nursing

The University of Portland’s School of Nursing offers an innovative Doctor of Nursing Practice program with a Family Nurse Practitioner population focus. The program prepares nurses for the highest level of advanced practice. There are two pathways by which to earn a DNP: a BSN to DNP pathway and a post Master’s pathway.

The DNP program requires only part-time enrollment so that nurses can continue to work and practice while attending UP. Courses are taught in a blended format combining online course work with one weekend per month of on campus intensives. Dates for intensives are posted for the entire semester at least one month in advance.

Students entering the program via the BSN to DNP pathway will become Family Nurse Practioners while participating in the program. After completing the 85 credit hour course of study, they will graduate with a DNP. This can typically be done in four years as a part-time student.

BSN to DNP applicants must hold a BSN from a nationally accredited (CCNE or NLNAC accredited) program with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. They must take and make acceptable scores on either the GRE or MAT. They must be licensed as an RN in their state of residence.

Students entering the program via the post Master’s program must either be a Nurse Practitioner or hold a Clinical Nurse Leader Master’s degree. Nurses in the post Master’s program will retain their advance practice specialization and graduate with a DNP degree.

Applicants to the post Master’s program must hold a Master’s degree in Nursing from a nationally accredited program with a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. Post Master’s students are not required to take the GRE or MAT. They do have to be licensed as an RN in their state of residence and be nationally certified and employed as a Nurse Practitioner (or hold a Clinical Nurse Leader Master’s degree).
