Grand Valley State University
Kirkhof College of Nursing

Grand Valley State University’s Kirkhof College of Nursing offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program to nurses seeking a terminal degree in advanced practice nursing. Grand Valley State offers both a BSN to DNP pathway and MSN to DNP pathway.

The Grand Valley State University DNP progrm is offerend on both a full-time or part-time basis. While most courses are offered at the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences in downtown Grand Rapids, many are offered in other formats to help accomodate those nurses who are working.

BSN prepared students entering the program will be required to take approximately 90 credit hours of coursework and log 1000 additional clinical hours.

The DNP program at Grand Valley State offers two areas of emphasis:

  • Advanced Nursing Practice
  • Nursing Administration and Health Care Systems

The Advanced Nursing Practice emphasis offers two specializations:

  • Child/Adolescent
  • Adult/Older Adult

MSN prepared students will create a customized DNP program based on the program emphasis selected and the student’s previous graduate courses.

Madonna University

Madonna University offers the clinical focused Doctor of Nursing Practice degree to MSN prepared nurses seeking a terminal degree in nursing practice. The post-master’s program is a 36 credit hour program. It is offered in a blended format combining traditional classrooms as well as online studies. The program can be completed in two years of full-time study.

Applicants to Madonna’s post-master’s DNP program must have a Master of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited program. The candidate’s graduate GPA must be a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Applicants specializing in advanced practice nursing must be nationally certifed as an APRN (Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Nurse Midwife, or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist). Graduates from an accredited nursing administration master’s degree program may also apply. Students must also hold an unencumbered Michigan license as a registered nurse.

Oakland University
School of Nursing

Oakland University’s School of Nursing offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice clinical practice terminial degree. The post-master’s program is a 32 credit hour program aimed at preparing nurse leaders for clinical practice.

The post-master’s DNP curriculum at Oakland University is designed to prepare advanced practice nurses as clinical leaders. It is also designed to prepare practitioners at the highest level in one or more areas of specialized advance practice such as that of a nurse practitioner, nurse administrator, nurse anesthetist, or clinical nurse specialist.

Applicants will need to possess a master’s degree in nursing from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program in some clinical area. Those holding a master’s in nursing administration can apply. Those with a non-clinical master’s degree in nursing can apply but may have to complete a post-master’s certificate program in a clinical area as part of the program. Applicants must have a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Prospective students must hold a license as an RN in the US or one of its territories.

University of Detroit Mercy
College of Health Professions/McAuley School of Nursing

The Doctor of Nursing Practice program at University of Detroit Mercy’s McAuley School of Nursing prepares nurses at the highest level of clinical competence.

The program is a post-Master’s DNP program. It was designed for certified APRNs in specialty roles including Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse Midwife, and Clinial Nurse Specialist. MSN prepared nurses in non-advanced practice roles like Nurse Administration, Executive Leadership, and Nursing Informatics are also eligible.

The DNP program requires the completion of 36 credit hours. It is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. Full-time students can complete the program in 16 months. Courses are taught using a hybrid format, blending online and face-to-face meetings.

Applicants must hold a Master of Science in Nursing or Nurse Anesthesia from an accredited program with a 3.2 or higher graduate GPA. The must hold and unencumbered Michigan RN license. Prospective students must be nationally certified and recognized by Michigan in an area of clinical specialization, if applicable.

University of Michigan – Flint

University of Michigan – Flint offers a Doctor of Nursing practice degree for nurses seeking to reach the highest level of education in advanced nursing practice. The program includes an RN to DNP pathway, a BSN to DNP pathway, and an MSN to DNP pathway. The program is taught using a primarily online format requiring typically only one campus visit per year.

The BSN to DNP pathway is a 4-year, part-time degree program designed for BSN prepared registered nurses seeking a DNP. The program requires 79-82 credit hours of course work. The specializations offered as part of this program include:

  • Adult Nurse Practitioner
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Applicants who are RNs with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree can apply as well. Before starting work on DNP courses, applicants to this RN to DNP pathway will be required to take an additional 8 or so courses in topics like Health Assessment, Nursing Research, Bioethics, and Nutrition.

Post-baccalaureate applicants must all have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. BSN to DNP applicants must hold an unencumbered RN license somewhere in the US and have actively practiced as an RN for at least a year.

The MSN to DNP pathway is a 2-4 year degree program designed for MSN prepared nurses certifed as a Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Clinical Nurse Specialist, or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. The program requires 31-33 credit hourse of course work.

MSN to DNP applicants must hold a Master of Science in Nursing and have an overall graduate GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. They must also be licensed as an APRN.

Wayne State University
College of Nursing

Wayne State University’s College of Nursing has offered a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program since 2008. The university offers full-time as well as part-time programs for all three pathways to obtain a DNP:

  • BSN to DNP
  • MSN to DNP with clinical specialty
  • MSN to DNP without clinical specialty

As part of earning their Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, the post-BSN student will receive all of the necessary training in a clinical specialty to sit for clinical specialty certification. This pathway can be completed in approximately 5 years.

The MSN to DNP with clinical specialty pathway is designed for nurses already holding a Master of Science in Nursing with a clinical specialty. This pathway can be completed in approximately 2.5 years for full-time students.

The MSN to DNP witout clinical specialty pathway is designed for nurses already holding an MSN degree without a clinical specialty. This program requires additional classes as part of the DNP program that will all them to site for clinical specialty certification. This pathway can be completed in approximately 3.5-4.5 years.
