Columbia University
School of Nursing

Columbia University’s School of Nursing offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program to prepare advanced practic nurses with skills needed to provide expert care for a variety of populations in a variety of health care settings. It is a post-Master’s DNP program requiring 40 credit hours.

Applicants to the DNP program must hold a Master’s degree in advanced nursing practice from a nationally (CCNE or NLNAC) accredited program. They must be licensed in New York as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse (or be eligible for NY licensure). Prospective students must be certified in an Advanced Practice Nurse specialty role.

Daemen College
Department of Nursing

Daemen College’s Department of Nursing offers an accredited Doctor of Nursing Practice program. It is a 36 credit post-Master’s DNP program.

Applicants to the program must hold a Master’s degree in advanced practice nursing from a nationally (CCNE or NLNAC) accredited nursing program. They must have a graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Prospective students should be licensed in New York as a Registered Nurse. They should also be licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in New York or be eligible to practice as one (depending on the specialty).

New York University
College of Nursing

New York University’s College of Nursing has a Doctor of Nursing Practice program designed to prepare leaders in advanced practice nursing. NYU’s DNP program is a 40 credit hour program. It is taught in an executive format so that students can continue to work as Advanced Practice Nurses. It can be completed in 3 years of part-time study.

The current DNP program is a post-Master’s pathway for nurses certified as a Nurse Practitioner or Nurse-Midwife. Options are also available to Advanced Practice Nurses seeking to prepare for additional specializations as a Nurse Practitioner or Nurse-Midwife. There are plans to offer a post-Baccalaureate program as well.

NYU’s DNP program is primarily designed for NPs and CNMs working in the following advanced nursing practice specialty roles:

Applicants to the NYU Doctor of Nursing Practice program should hold a Master’s degree in Nursing from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program with a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.5+ on a 4.0 scale. They must have competitive scores on the MAT or GRE within the last five years. Prospective students must have an unencumbered RN license and be authorized to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse-Midwife in the state where their Capstone Project and internship will take place. They must be nationally certified as a Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse-Midwife in a specialty role offered at NYU. Otherwise, additional courses will be required so that they can prepare to site for certification as a NP or CNM along the way to their DNP.

Pace University
Lienhard School of Nursing

The Doctor of Nursing Practice program offered by Pace University’s Lienhard School of Nursing is based on Pace’s years of experience in educating advanced practice Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs).

Pace’s DNP program is a 37 credit hour post-Master’s program. 27 hours are earned via courses. The remaining 10 hours are earned thorugh a mentorship clinical mentorship where they identify and complete an evidence-based Capstone project.

Pace has clinical partnerships with several hospitals and nursing services to support the mentorship program including:

  • NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation – Elmhurst Hospital Center
  • Hudson Valley Hospital
  • Montefiore Medical Center
  • Northern Westchester Hospital Center

Applicants to Paces Doctor of Nursing Practice program must hold a Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program with a graduate GPA of 3.3 or higher (or equivalent professional experience). Prospective students must be certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and license as an RN in the state where the Capstone project will be completed. They should have experience working as an Advanced Practice Nurse. The program does not require tests like the GRE or MAT.

* Pace’s program is designed for Family Nurse Practitioners. But an FNP-DNP option does exist for Nurse Practitioners prepared in other non-family specialty roles who are willing to obtain FNP certification while in the DNP program.

St. John Fisher College
Wegmans School of Nursing

St. John Fisher College’s Wegmans School of Nursing offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice program as they keep up with the evolution of the nursing profession. St. John Fisher offers two entry points to the DNP: a post-Baccalaureate program and a post-Master’s program.

St. John Fisher’s DNP program is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. They utilize an accelerated weekend format. The 16 week semester is divided into two 8 week segments. A maximum of two classes can be taken during each of the 8 week segments for a total of four classes per 16 week semester. Under the weekend format, classes are taught every other weekend. One class is taught each Friday night and another class is taught each Saturday.

The post-Baccalaureate program requires a minimum of 72 credit hours (depending on the specialization role selected). It is a three and a half (3.5) year program which prepares students as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist as part of the program.

Applicants to the post-Baccalaureate DNP program must meet the requirements for the Master’s in Advanced Practice Nursing program.

The post-Master’s program is a two (2) year program requiring 48 credit hours. Students entering the post-Masters program are required to have advanced practice preparation in a specialty role as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse-Midwife, or Nurse Anesthetist. Students can complete the program in four semesters (two years) as a full-time student taking four classes per semester. Students can complete the program in eight semesters (four years) by taking two courses per semester.

Applicants for the post-Master’s DNP program must hold a Master’s degree in Advanced Practice Nursing from an accredited program with a graduate GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Candidates must have a New York State license as a registered nurse, a New York State certificate as an Advanced Practice Nurse, or be eligible and nationally certified in an advanced nursing specialty role. Prospective students must have at least a year of post-Master’s clinical experience.

Stoney Brook University’s School of Nursing offers a post-Masters Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. It is a 42 credit hour program that can be completed in 18 months. The Stoney Brook DNP program is offered through an on-site, executive cohort model.

Applicants to the DNP program must hold a Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program with a graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. They must be licensed as an RN and preferably hold a national certification in an advanced nursing practice specialty. Prospective students must have at least one year experience in advanced practice nursing (two years prefered).

The Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program offered by University of Rochester’s School of Nursing has two entry options: a BSN to DNP program and a post-Master’s DNP program.

Students entering the post-Baccalaureate program will be prepared as an Advanced Practice Nurse in one of the following specialty roles through their existing Master’s program as part of the DNP program:

They must be licensed in the US or a US territory as a registered nurse, and must have 2 years of experience as an RN in a clinical setting.

Applicants to the post-Master’s DNP must have a Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program with a graduate GPA of 3.5 or higher. They must be licensed as an RN. They must be nationally certified in an advanced practice specialty and hold current license or registration in that clinical specialty. Prospective students must have 3 years of experience as an RN in a clinical setting.
