Maryville University – St. Louis
Maryville University St. Louis offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program designed to prepare Advanced Practice Nurses with clinical practice and leadership skills required for today’s complex health care system. They offer two DNP pathways: a post-MSN pathway and a post-BSN pathway.
Applicants to the BSN to DNP pathway must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a nationally (CCNE or NLNAC) accredited nursing program with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher. They must hold a current, unencumbered license as a registered nurse within the US.
Applicants to the MSN to DNP pathway must hold an MS or MSN degree from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited nursing program with a 3.5 or higher cumulative graduate GPA. They must hold a license as an RN and be board certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse.

Barnes Jewish College
Goldfarb School of Nursing
Barnes Jewish College’s Galdfarb School of Nursing offers a unique doctoral Nursing degree: the Doctor of Nursing Practice/Doctor of Philosophy (DNP/PhD) in Nursing degree program. The program combines the clinical practice aspects of a DNP program with the scholarly research aspects of a PhD in Nursing program.
The DNP/PhD program offers two entry pathways: a post-Baccalaureate and a post-Master’s pathway. Classes are delivered online, but students are required to attend a 5 day intensive on campus each year they are in the program.
Students entering the program via the post-Baccalaureate pathway first complete Master’s level work in preparation for one of the following specialty roles:
- Nurse Educator
- Nurse Executive
Post-Baccalaureate students complete the program in five years. Students in the Post-Master’s program complete the program in four years.

Saint Louis University
School of Nursing
The School of Nursing at Saint Louis University offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program to meet the growing demand for Doctorate-prepared clinical nurses and nurse educators. SLU offers two pathways to the degree: a BSN to DNP pathway and a post-Master’s DNP pathway.
The BSN to DNP program is offered online, but requires students to be on campus two times during the program. They will attend a 5 day intensive at the beginning of the program and will be on campus for 1-2 days at the end of the program to present their Capstone project.
The program requires 69-70 credit hours. It is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis and can be completed within 4 or 5 years, respectively. Students will be prepared in one of the following specialty roles:
- Family Nurse Practitioner
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner
- Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
- Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Students will sit for their specialty certification exam after completing their specialty courses but before taking doctoral level clinical courses.
Applicants to the BSN to DNP program must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The GRE is required to have been taken in the last 5 years. Prospective students must hold an unencumbered license as a registered nurse in the state where their clinical experience will be completed, and must have one year of clinical experience.
The post-Master’s DNP program is available to students holding a Master’s in Nursing with an advanced practice specialty like Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist. Like the post-Baccalaureate program, the post-Master’s program is delivered online, requiring two visits to the campus at St. Louis University. The first visit will be a 2-3 day orientation . The second will be a 1-2 day visit at the end of the program to present their Capstone project.
Applicants to the program must hold a Master’s in Nursing from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program with a 3.25 or higher cumulative GPA. They must be certified as a Nurse Practitioner in one of the specialty roles listed above. Certified Clinical Nurse Specialists will also be considered. Prospective students must hold an unencumbered license as an RN and be certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state where they will perform their clinical experience.

Sinclair School of Nursing
The Sinclair School of Nursing at University of Missouri – Columbia offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. The DNP program at Mizzou offers three entry pathways:
- Post-Baccalaureate
- Post-Master’s with Advanced Practice Nursing Specialty
- Post-Master’s without Advanced Practice Nursing Specialty
The Post-Baccalaureate program is a BSN to DNP program for nurses seeking to become an Advanced Practice Nurse in either the Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner role with one of the following specializations:
- Family Nurse Practitioner
- Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
- Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
- Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist
- Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist
Full-time students can complete the post-Baccalaureate DNP program in four years. Part-time students can complete it in five to six years.
The Post-Masters with Advanced Practice Specialty DNP program is designed for Master’s prepared Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists. It can be completed in two years as a full-time student or three years as a part-time student.
The Post-Masters without Advanced Practice Specialty program is designed for registered nurses with a Master’s in Nursing who are not prepared or practicing as a Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or for APRNs who want to add another specialty role. Students admitted to this program will have individualized plans of study based on prior course work. It will require fewer hours than the post-Baccalaureate DNP program but more than the Post-Masters with Advanced Practice Specialty DNP program.

School of Nursing
University of Missouri – Kansas City’s School of Nursing was the first in the state to offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. The program admitted their first class in 2007.
The program is a 31 credit hour post-Masters DNP program designed for certified Advanced Practice Nurses in an active clinical practice. Courses are delivered online in synchronous and asynchronous modes, but students are required to attend two 3-day sessions on campus during the program. The DNP program can be completed in two years of full-time study or three years of part-time study.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Nursing. They must hold a valid, unencumbered license as an RN and be nationally certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Nurse-Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist).

The College of Nursing at University of Missouri – St. Louis offers a post-Master’s MSN to DNP entry pathway to the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. The program is designed for nationally certified Advanced Practice Nurses. UMSL’s program requires 30 credit hours and can be completed in 2.5 years of part-time study.
Applicants to the post-Master’s DNP program should hold a Master of Science in Nursing from a nationally accredited program with a 3.0 or higher graduate GPA. They must be licensed as an RN and currently be practicing in an advanced practice role. Prospective students must be currently recognized in Missouri or be eligible for recognition in Missouri as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
